I have been thinking a lot lately about how God can call us to take a step of faith and do something completely unexpected. I wrote my last blog, Small Steps, Big Faith, on this very topic- about how God can unexpectedly call us into an unknown adventure and how we need to just start by taking the first small steps in faith. Since I wrote the article I have taken some steps in faith and have discovered that though it can be intimitdating, it has definitely been worth taking the steps.
In the blog I talked about how I think God’s call can catch us off guard because it may not be the direction we had been planning to go or maybe it is to somewhere we have not even desired to go. Maybe it is something very unfamiliar or new to us. We may feel under-confident, wondering whether we have the ability, strengths, capacity, or time to do that activity or task. We may prefer to do other things – things we enjoy, find comfort in, experience success in. I think we can be afraid and unsure of the unknown, preferring to stay in structures and routines that are comforting in their familiarity. Often, when God calls us to something it may be to tasks where we will become more isolated or alone, making it difficult to separate ourselves from the comfort of companions and community. There are just so many reasons why it is so tempting to ignore God’s promptings and call, and stay tucked within the safety of the shoreline and our familiar lives.
Last week at church we sang Hillsong’s worship song, Oceans, and the words, as always, deeply resonated with me. They re-affirm for me that God will call us out of our safety into the unexpected waves and oceans of life. He will ask us to step out of our boat, and start walking, just as Jesus asked Peter to step out of his boat. But it also affirmed for me that we can be assured we will never be alone as God walks before us, behind us, and right beside us. And He will always make sure that we will have what is necessary to fulfill the call He has placed in our life.
We can count on His grace and His sovereign hand to lead us and hold onto us. He will guide us. And when we stumble or start to sink, as we surely will – we can be certain that His hand will reach out and lift us up. And when the waves can threaten to overwhelm us it is such comfort to know that we have a divine lifeguard who will never let us drown as long as we respond to his call and keep our eyes focused on Him.
Since my last post, I have stepped out in faith in a couple areas of my life. I think the first step in each case was the hardest. But once I started moving I could sense that I was gaining momentum and greater confidence. And although there have been moments where I felt overwhelmed and incredibly uncertain, I just kept focused on God’s promise that his sovereign hand will be there, tightly clasped with mine, to guide me and lift me up, and to simply affirm he is providing companionship for the journey.
As I sit in my kitchen this morning, sipping my coffee and writing this, I wonder what God has called or is calling, you to? What new adventure or great unknown are you being prompted to take a step of faith into? And how have you responded to that call?
For me, as I respond to God’s call I am becoming more certain than ever that God’s grace abounds, that his loving hands will guide us as we walk, and that God will never fail us.
